Tourism Spending Soars: Japan Breaks Records in Q1 FY 2024

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office is excited to share the latest inbound consumption trends from the Japan Tourism Agency, revealing a surge in travel spending by foreign visitors.

Indian visitors to Japan are contributing significantly to Japan’s travel economy. Indian travellers spent 19.2 billion yen (approx. ₹10,768 million) during the April-June period of 2024, a remarkable 120.7% increase from the pre-pandemic levels in the same period of 2019, and a 63.1% rise compared to 2023.

In the April-June 2024 period, overall travel consumption reached an impressive 2,140.2 billion yen (approx. 1.2 million crores), reflecting a 73.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a 68.8% rise fromthe same period in 2019.  

Indian visitors travel trends in Japan:

Total Expenditure: Indian visitors’ total expenditure for the April-June period in 2024 was 19.2 billionyen, accounting for 0.9% of the total foreign visitor spend.
Spending Habits: Indian travellers allocated most of their budget to accommodation (44.3%), followed by food & beverages (18.6%), shopping (17.5%), transportation (15.6%) and leisure (3.7%).
Higher Average Spending: The average travel expenditure per Indian visitor was 266,186 yen, which is 11.3% higher than the overall average spends per foreign visitor (239,028 yen). This represents a 61.4% increase compared to 2019.

Tourism and Leisure Spending: Indian tourists visiting Japan for leisure spent an average of 299,950 yen, which is 25.8% higher than the global average of 238,389 yen for the same category, marking a 68.2% rise from 2019. A total of 71,923 Indians traveled to Japan between April and June 2024, reflecting a 36.7% growth compared to the same period in 2019 and 48.3% rise compared to same period in 2023. Notably, Indian visitors to Japan in May 2024 was the highest among the first quarter of fiscal year 2024. In May 2024, 29,100 Indians travelled to Japan, which is 61.7% rise compared to May 2023.

This survey highlights India’s strong and growing interest in Japan as a travel destination. Commenting on the Growth:The increase in spending by visitors from India is a testament to the country’s prosperity and growing affluence. We are optimistic that this trend will contribute to the continued growth and development of the tourism sectors in both India and Japan. Notably, accommodation constitutes a significant portion of travel spending by Indian visitors. Japan boasts numerous world-class hotel brands that offer exceptional service and are ideally located for both leisure and business travelers. We sincerely hope that more Indian tourists will choose to experience Japan’s outstanding hospitality and services. As part of JNTO’s ongoing efforts to attract Indian visitors to Japan, the Japan Travel Fair, a B2C event, was organized last month at Pacific Mall, Tagore Garden, New Delhi. Next month, we plan to conduct a three-city roadshow for Indian travel agents. During these roadshows, we will provide agents with in-depth training and detailed information about Japan, enabling them to offer customized travel packages tailored to Indian travellers, including vegetarian-friendly cuisine and family-friendly tours.
