Purim meets Holi during India at Jaffa Port celebrations in Israel

Cultural exchange has long been a cornerstone of India-Israel relations, with both nations actively promoting cultural and artistic relations. The Embassy of Israel in India has been instrumental in bringing Israeli culture to Indians through film festivals, culinary events, and culinary collaborations, further strengthening people-to-people connections.

On March 16, 2025, the Embassy of India in Israel, in collaboration with the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo, hosted the India at Jaffa Port—Purim-Holi Celebrations event. This unique festival brought together two vibrant traditions—Holi, the Indian festival of colours, and Purim, the joyous Jewish holiday—into a spectacular cultural gathering at Jaffa Port, symbolising the longstanding and flourishing friendship between India and Israel.

The event showcased the richness of India’s heritage, featuring classical Indian dance performances, energetic Bollywood dance workshops, traditional music, and interactive activities that transported attendees to the heart of Indian festivities. More than 3,000 visitors immersed themselves in a vibrant atmosphere, reflecting the seamless blending of traditions and reinforcing the cultural bridge between the two nations.

Deputy Ambassador Rajiv Bodwade, said, “I am happy to tell you that the Embassy of India, in collaboration with the Municipality of Tel Aviv-Yafo, is celebrating the Indian Festival of Holi and the Jewish festival of Purim today, here in Jaffa Port. Interestingly, these two festivals fall on the same day yearly, as India and Israel traditionally follow the lunar calendar. This is just one of many examples of the cultural similarity that we share, which strengthens the unique and rich friendship between our two countries. While the rest of the world is focusing on cultural distinctiveness, India and Israel are happy to celebrate their similarities. Chag Purim Sameach and Happy Holi!”

Kobi Yerdani, CEO of Jaffa Port, added, “Jaffa Port is proud to collaborate with the Embassy of India in Israel to celebrate the Holi and Purim festivals. Jaffa Port, which has served as a gateway to the Land of Israel throughout history, is happy to open its gates to the rich and magnificent culture of India, a country that is a true friend of Israel.”

Speaking on the occasion, Amruta Bangera, Director of Marketing, Israel Ministry of Tourism, India, said, “India and Israel share cultural and historical ties, and events like the India at Jaffa Port, highlight the warmth between our people. It was a beautiful representation of our shared traditions. We welcome more Indian travellers to explore this beautiful country and experience its unique blend of history, spirituality, and modernity.”

With growing cultural exchanges, thriving tourism, and deep-rooted historical ties, the Purim-Holi festival at Jaffa Port stands as another shining example of the ever-strengthening India-Israel relationship, paving the way for more collaborations in the years to come.
